That exact scam happened to my 96 year old mother. She was scammed of $1000 by buying the caller Target gift cards to refund him. It was the money in her savings account he had moved. Like you, she was so afraid this “ nice guy would lose his job.” Hours later, she looked at her bank account and that $1000 was gone. She was devastated. We got on the phone with Target and the bank and there was nothing they could do, since the gift cards had already been redeemed and my mother had taken the money out of the bank in cash. She was absolutely devastated, feeling so violated and as though she had lost her good sense. It was horribly demoralizing to her. She happened to keep the number he had given her. When I called the number, the guy answered, and then hung up. I called back and the line had been disconnected…. Just that fast. These people have hundreds of phone numbers they are using to mask where they are calling from. It’s horrifying and so very devastating when it happens. I’m sorry you experienced it, too, but it shows how good these people are at conning us. Thanks for raising awareness with this article.
